Today’s society seems fixated on the next big thing. I wrote about this a few years ago and referenced the book, Spectacle, which I highly recommend you read if you want to become a master at marketing and selling.

If everyone else is fascinated by what’s new, it’s insightful and important for you to consider things that remain constant. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, once highlighted this perspective, stating, “I almost never get the question: ‘What’s not going to change in the next 10 years?’ And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two.”

This philosophy is exemplified in Vienna’s iconic Würstelstände, or sausage stands. As detailed in Monocle’s article “Dog Days,” these stands have been a staple of Viennese culture for decades, serving as communal hubs that reflect the city’s evolving tastes while steadfastly offering traditional fare.

The resilience of these sausage stands underscores a broader principle: while the world around us evolves, certain human behaviors and needs remain unchanged.

Morgan Housel, in his book Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes, emphasizes the importance of focusing on these constants. He suggests that by understanding what remains steady, we can better navigate the uncertainties of the future. In essence, while innovation and adaptation are crucial, recognizing and valuing the enduring aspects of our culture and behavior provide a stable foundation upon which to build.

As you plan for a successful year, take a moment to step back and ask yourself: What are the unchanging truths that form the foundation of your business, your practice, or your life? These constants—like the timeless appeal of Vienna’s Würstelstände—can serve as your guide through uncertainty. Build your strategies on what will always matter to your customers, your team, and your community.
