Learning to Delegate

When it comes to running a successful business, one major act separates those who will try to succeed from those who will succeed. That is the act of delegation. Until that is mastered, you may find yourself feeling like a hamster on a wheel, doing a lot of running but never getting very far.

Think about it – if you ran a business where you had to do everything, you wouldn’t have time to excel at anything. In my business, there is no way that I can answer the phones, greet patients, provide clinical treatment, take care of accounting, and all of the other numerous duties that keep the company running successfully. Luckily, I don’t have to!

Being a good leader or business manager means knowing when it’s time to delegate. You simply assign those tasks to someone else so that you don’t have to be the one to do them. Meanwhile, you can focus more on doing the things you love. And you know what? That’s what is going to help your business — and your bottom line — grow. It’s all about making the most of your time. Your time is too valuable to be spent doing tasks that someone else can do at a fraction of the cost, with the cost being calculated in both time and money.

Here’s the key to delegating that every business manager must have in order to be successful: you must hire well. You must put the right people in each position. There is no compromising on this. If you do, your weakest link can become problematic. With competent employees handling each task, you can take your mind off those areas, knowing they are being handled correctly. This frees you to focus on the bigger issues, like expansion, training, marketing, strategic planning.

Those who are not used to delegating may find it a bit nerve racking, to begin with. That’s understandable, because you are used to controlling every aspect of your business or practice. But trust me when I say that, when you let go and learn how to effectively delegate, your business will thrive as a result. I’ve discovered: the more I let go, the better my results. The more I micromanage, the poorer my results.

Make a list of 5 things, today, that you want to have off your plate and delegated to someone else in the business by this time next week. Make the commitment to get started with delegating a few tasks each week, at least for a few months, which will give you time to get comfortable and see the beneficial return.
